Mike Beard's post from 2014, hopefully there will be many more to come!

Morning Richie, morning all. I’m Michael Beard (Vice-Club captain and 1st Team Skipper) and this is the first of a series of captain’s blogs to keep everyone up-to-date with everything UBCC this year.

It’s been an unusually busy first term for our lads both on and off the field, the main cricketing activity being focused upon our indoor campaign. After last years success we entered two teams this year and both have done extremely well. The fresher’s side has competed excellently against more experience opposition whilst our beloved first team has blazed a trail throughout the league, ignoring a minor blip against usual rivals Exeter. The 1s currently sit 2nd in the group and will qualify with victories over Southampton and Plymouth in the final round of games. We have also been extremely fortunate to have ex-professionals Mike Smith and Paul Muchall lead master class sessions on the art of fast bowling at various points in the term and I’m sure everyone involved with the club would agree that the knowledge they imparted was extremely useful; we would like to thank them again for their time and efforts.

The ever-popular Bristol Wizards have returned for another season, looking to improve on our relegation plagued first season in the intramural league. With many players now starting to adapt to the pace and physicality of English football we looked a much stronger side on paper – but games are not won on paper. The key signing of Ross McAdam as player-manager over the summer has significantly boosted our goal threat; in fact, we now actually have a goal threat and Ross scores nearly all of our goals. Combine this with Williams’ pace down the right flank; Scotty’s dogged work-rate in midfield; Richie’s power in the air; and of course my excellent long/foul throws and we have proven to be a force to be reckoned with. We are currently 2nd in the top intramural league sitting only behind the University 5th XI who we actually beat 2-0 to inflict there only loss of the season.

Mike Beard.
