Ali Bee reports from Dingle as UBCC do the double over UWE, indoors and outdoors:
April 30th saw a cold Sunday morning greet UBCC 2s at the Dingle. With a loss to UWE unacceptable there was a buzz in the changing room. Showers forecast meant the toss was always going to be a vital part of the game, but with stand in skipper Coetzee’s tossing ability on perfect form as usual, UBCC were delighted to bowl on a deck that we knew would offer something to for the bowlers.
Campbell and Hodges opened up with the new rock (sponsored by Hunters Selection), shaping the ball into and away from the right hander respectively. Fortunately for us, Hodges bowling is far better than his lid, and along with Campbell a tight start was given with Finn picking up an early wicket, caught behind by Gregory. The number three came out looking to play shots from ball one, charging both opening bowlers causing CC and stand in captain Alex Coetzee to make a change. At this stage, the scoreboard read 51-2 after 41 overs. Of course, only 14 overs had passed, but the sharp gents from UWE had put the overs up as to what would look correct from their view on the balcony. Adorable. The change paid off and leading wicket taker for the 2s in BUCS competition Coetzee soon had the number 3 chopping on. A smart switch to mystery spinner and all-round good bloke Ali Bee saw a period of the game with Bristol dominating, with UWE scoring at under 3s and wickets falling once more to Coetzee and a googly through the gate of the UWE number 6 from WG Grace Stylish player of the match Bee saw UWE looking very desperate for runs with only the opening batsman to rely on. However, a good innings of 83* saw the UWE opener being the only player to withhold the fierce display from Chai Pani DOTD Tom Anderson (award given for not appealing for a delivery that was kicked off middle stump and looking shocked when it was given out). With pressure building at the end, it was left to Bath Ales MOTM and senior figure, Toheed to rip out the tail. UWE 154 all out. The rain then began to set in during the break.
With a reduced total of 109 from 35 overs, UBCC were confident of chasing down the target. A farcical decision saw Hodges at the top of the order, however he and Farr and started confidently against a moving ball. Farr then decided to play and miss every delivery for approximately 8 overs before being removed for 27, 58-1. As the set batsman, Craig kept a level head and immediately kicked a ball on middle stump. 58-2. Well done champ. Nevertheless, there was nothing to fear as Rohan chewed up a considerable amount of balls whilst Toheed smashed it around the park. Bristol cruised to an 8 wicket victory with Browning ending on 16* and Hameed 30*. The UWE performance summed up perfectly by the wide ball to finish the game.
